A local pool store can also provide a detailed water analysis when the pool has persistent cloudiness, staining, algae, or unusual chemical demand.

Take the sample from elbow depth, away from return jets, skimmers, and chemical feeders. Test at roughly the same time of day when possible. If you just added chemicals, let the pump circulate the water first. Testing immediately can produce a reading that does not represent the whole pool.

  • Free chlorine: 1 to 3 parts per million, or higher as needed for pools with more stabilizer

How to Balance Pool Water in the Right Order

Pool chemicals affect one another. Adjusting them at random can create a frustrating cycle of adding one product, then needing another to correct the first. A reliable order is total alkalinity first, then pH, then calcium hardness, then cyanuric acid, with sanitizer maintained throughout the process.

Correct Total Alkalinity First

Total alkalinity acts as a buffer for pH. When it is too low, pH can swing quickly. That can leave water corrosive, cause eye irritation, and contribute to etched plaster or damaged metal components. Low alkalinity is usually raised with sodium bicarbonate, added in measured doses with the pump running.

When alkalinity is too high, pH tends to rise repeatedly. Florida pools often experience this because of warm water, aeration from fountains or spillovers, and certain chlorine systems. A pH reducer may lower both pH and alkalinity, but it should be added slowly and retested after circulation. Trying to force a large correction in one treatment can overshoot the target and make the water harder to stabilize.

Adjust pH for Comfort and Equipment Protection

Once alkalinity is in range, adjust pH. High pH can make chlorine less effective and encourage cloudy water and calcium scale on tile, heaters, salt cells, and fixtures. Low pH can make water aggressive, leading to corrosion, surface damage, and discomfort for swimmers.

Use a pH increaser when pH is low and a pH decreaser when it is high. Add chemicals according to the label, preferably in smaller increments. Keep the pump running, brush any product that settles on the floor, and wait before retesting. Never mix pool chemicals together or add water to chemicals. Bring Calcium Hardness Into Range

Calcium is especially important in plaster, pebble, and concrete pools. Water with too little calcium may pull minerals from the surface, contributing to roughness and deterioration over time. Water with too much calcium can form scale, particularly when pH is also high.

Calcium hardness is easier to raise than lower. A calcium increaser can bring a low reading up gradually. If hardness is very high, dilution with fresh water is often the practical solution. Manage Cyanuric Acid Carefully

Cyanuric acid, often called stabilizer or conditioner, protects chlorine from being destroyed by sunlight. A pool may show a normal chlorine reading while algae still gains a foothold because the available chlorine is not strong enough for the amount of stabilizer present.

Stabilizer is commonly introduced through stabilized chlorine tablets and some granular chlorine products. It does not evaporate. If cyanuric acid is too high, partial water replacement is generally required. This is one reason tablet-only chlorination can create problems over time, especially in a pool that receives regular service but little splash-out or dilution.

Keep Chlorine Matched to Pool Conditions

Chlorine is the sanitizer that keeps water hygienic, but a single target number does not fit every pool. Free chlorine should be maintained consistently, and the needed level rises when cyanuric acid is higher. Heavy use, rainstorms, high temperatures, debris, and early algae growth also increase chlorine demand.

Check free chlorine at least two or three times per week during active swimming season. Daily checks are helpful after storms, parties, extended heat, or when water begins to lose its sparkle. If chlorine disappears quickly, do not simply keep adding more without checking pH, stabilizer, circulation, and filter condition. The problem may be poor water balance, organic contamination, or early algae rather than a simple lack of sanitizer.

Total chlorine is also useful. When total chlorine is noticeably higher than free chlorine, combined chlorine may be present. That can cause the sharp “chlorine” smell people associate with poorly maintained pools. The smell is not a sign of too much clean chlorine. It is often a sign that the pool needs proper oxidation and better sanitation control.

Circulation and Filtration Are Part of Water Balance

Perfect test results will not keep a pool clear if water is not moving through a clean filter. Run the pump long enough to turn over the pool water and distribute chemicals effectively. In summer, many Florida pools need longer daily run times than they do during cooler months. The right schedule depends on pump speed, pool size, bather load, and equipment condition.

Clean or backwash the filter based on manufacturer guidance and pressure readings. Common Signs the Water Is Still Off

Cloudy water, recurring algae, burning eyes, scale on the tile, stained surfaces, and chlorine that vanishes overnight are all warning signs. They do not always point to one chemical. For example, cloudy water might come from high pH, inadequate filtration, low sanitizer, calcium scale, or fine debris bypassing a damaged filter.

A green pool is also not always solved by pouring in an algaecide. It typically needs a full assessment of sanitizer level, pH, stabilizer, circulation, brushing, and filtration. Treating only the visible color can leave the underlying problem in place.
